Year 1

Year 1 classes are called Gold, Orange and Silver.

Year 1

Year 1 is an important transitional year in every child’s education. It can be difficult for children to adapt from the more play based curriculum in Reception to the focused national curriculum of Key Stage 1. Therefore at Southville we incorporate many of the principles and activities used in Early Years into Year 1 including learning through play and many multi-sensory activities. We slowly introduce more independent recording in books and on paper throughout the year and specific focused activities. This has been extremely successful and has meant children have adapted well to a more structured environment than the Early Years.

In Year 1 our Topics include The Park, In the night sky, Joyning the learning (Fairyland), Barnaby Bear, Dinosuars, A ocean life for me and Castles. We will be putting up Topic Webs in the class windows each half term so you can see what we will be doing in more detail.

We send home weekly spellings for children to learn and be tested on every Monday. Initially all children will be receiving the same spellings to get them into the routine of learning and being tested so some spelling may seem a little easy. We send home more specific spellings in January when we will also put posters up in the windows to say who has got all their spellings correct. Also in January we will begin sending out homework on a Friday. This will need to be returned by the following Wednesday.

Our PE days are:

Orange Class: Wednesday and Thursday

Silver Class: Monday and Thursday

Gold Class: Monday and Thursday

Children need a named PE kit in school of shorts and a T-shirt. Children do not need plimsolls until the Summer term as they have PE barefoot in hall.

Children must not wear jewellery to school.
